According to data by the Australian Genetic Heart Disease Registry, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in Australia,. Shockingly, this devastating condition can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time – including young, healthy athletes engaged in physical activity. Let’s explore the importance of AEDs, the benefits of having them on hand, and why defibrillators for sporting clubs and facilities program are necessary in this blog.
Remember that prompt action, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), can significantly increase the chances of survival of athletes and spectators alike.
Why defibrillators for sporting clubs and facilities program are a must
It is crucial for sporting clubs and facilities to have defibrillators readily available, as physical activity, especially high-intensity exercise, increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Despite the common belief that young athletes are exempt from heart conditions, studies show that 90% of sudden cardiac arrests in young athletes occur during or immediately after exercise.
Shockingly, athletes are three times more likely to experience SCA compared to non-athletes, and sudden cardiac arrests that happen outside of hospitals only have a 12% survival rate in general. This accounts for approximately 22,000 to 33,000 annual deaths. This is why it is essential for sporting clubs and facilities to have portable defibrillators or AEDs (automated external defibrillators) available at all times.
In case of a sudden cardiac arrest, bystander action involving the quick administration of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) within 3-5 minutes after collapse, coupled with the use of an Therefore, having a defibrillator on-site can make a critical difference in saving lives.
What is an automated external defibrillator (AED)?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that is used to diagnose and treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) by delivering a shock to the heart. The AED is designed to be user-friendly, even for people with little or no medical training, and provides step-by-step instructions on how to use it in an emergency situation.
How does a defibrillator work?
The AED analyses the heart rhythm of the person in cardiac arrest and will only deliver a shock if it detects a specific type of life-threatening heart rhythm. If the AED detects that a shock is needed, it will instruct the user to press a button to deliver the shock to the person’s heart.
The shock helps to restore the heart’s normal rhythm and can be a critical intervention in saving someone’s life.
AEDs are commonly found in public places, such as airports, shopping centers, and community sports venues, where large numbers of people gather. They are also used by emergency medical services personnel, and some people choose to have AEDs in their homes if they or someone they know has a history of heart problems.
Defibrillator grants for sporting clubs
The NSW Government’s Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program has allocated $4 million over four years to assist Councils, and sport and recreational facilities owners on behalf of sport and recreational clubs across NSW in the purchase and maintenance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) which, together with effective CPR, can increase survival rates from only 3-5% to over 65%!
If you missed the opportunity to apply for the Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program for 2022/23, don’t worry – you can still express your interest in the program for the future. Eligible sporting clubs and organisations are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to indicate their interest in the program and the number of defibrillators they would require.
Note that submitting an EOI is not an application for the defibrillator grants NSW 2023 program; it is is currently closed for applications. However, the NSW Office of Sport will contact organisations that have submitted an EOI once the program opens again for applications. This is a great opportunity to get ahead and ensure that your organisation is ready to apply for the grant once it becomes available again.
