Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest during an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Reports indicate that he was twice resuscitated with a defibrillator and CPR.
According to Fortune, in the USA between 100 and 150 sudden cardiac deaths occur during competitive sports, (per research published by the American College of Cardiology).
While a heart attack can cause cardiac arrest, the two are not synonymous. Some people may experience dizziness, fatigue, nausea, chest pain, heart palpitations, loss of consciousness, or shortness of breath before going into cardiac arrest, but others may not have any symptoms at all.
HOWEVER, the more you exercise, the more strain is put on the heart muscle.
Which is why the NSW Government has allocated $2 million over four years to assist sporting clubs across NSW in the purchase and maintenance of defibrillators/AEDs.
Applicants can request grants for up to three AEDs, with the maximum grant for each AED not exceeding $3,000. In essence, the defibrillator is FREE so there is NO EXCUSE for your club not to have one of these life-saving devices on-hand.
Nor should the cost be a barrier to purchasing a defibrillator even if your business or home is not eligible for the grant.
Integrity Health & Safety, one of Australia’s leading defibrillator suppliers, is proud to be on the NSW Office of Sport’s panel to supply defibrillators to sports clubs.
Contact us without delay to see how we can help you – and may Damar make a speedy recovery.
